CDLR – CHEP – GMA – APNs – common acronyms at Alba Manufacturing because they relate to our unique, pre-engineered, pallet handling solutions. Recently, an end-user contacted a member of the Alba Partner Network (APN) presenting a unique challenge.
The end-user was a high-volume consumer products company seeking to satisfy the evolving demands of various retail clients. The goal was to install a flexible robotic palletizing cell capable of handling traditional 40” wide x 48” long CHEP "Stringer" Pallets (Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pool) / GMA Pallets (Grocery Manufacturers Association) weighing up to 3,300 lbs. and 40” wide x 24” long CHEP "Half Pallets" weighting up to 1,650 lbs.
Through careful review and discussion, Alba provided a solution utilizing pre-engineered products including CDLR (Chain Driven Live Roller) Model 251140-4 and TFT (Through-Frame-Transfer) Model 251140-4-3S.
A key element of this successful project was the strategy to end-load the half pallets while side-loading the traditional pallets in order to always maintain bottom board orientation perpendicular to the conveyor rollers and transfer chains. |

Alba provided and mounted photo-eyes positioned to accommodate the various pallets. Multiple photo eyes mounted to the CDLR provided the flexibility to convey and position different sized pallets while creating an indexing capability so that two pallets could be positioned to be removed by a fork truck simultaneously. Alba also supplied an ultrasonic sensor to detect the presence of the fork truck for safe operation of the conveyor. To simplify installation, the CDLR conveyor provided two driven zones sharing a common structural channel frame.
This project included several value-added features: pre-mounted photo eyes and ultrasonic sensor wired to a common junction box, an adjustable end stop, special paint color and most importantly, the cooperative, problem-solving efforts that are typical within the APN (Alba Partner Network).
