Let's Destack and Slip, Even in the Cold!

Designed to integrate with a robotic pallet loading system, this Pallet Destacker and Slip Sheet Dispenser (PD-SSD) handle 40" x 48" GMA pallets and 40" x 48" x 0.02" slip sheets. The PD-SSD was specifically designed for use in a 40oF cooler and dispenses at a rate of two (2) pallets per minute. Alba was challenged to create an effective, yet budget-friendly solution as stainless steel wasn’t in our end-user’s budget. Due to possible oxidation, we implemented the following:

We utilized a STEEL-IT® Two-Part Epoxy Coating System (a unique stainless steel leafing pigment). This catalyzed system creates a hard, non-toxic, metallic finish that safeguards a wide variety of materials from the effects of moisture and high-pressure wash downs.
Additionally, we utilized HKK's Aqua-Series® Chain for the drag chain conveyors, a perfect choice where corrosion resistance, efficiency, flexibility and high strength are needed. The Aqua-Series chains are designed to provide maximum corrosion resistance, far superior to zinc or nickel plated chains while maintaining the strength and durability of carbon steel chain. Additionally, the Aqua-Series chains are complete with cold-forged solid bushings and rollers which provide a dramatically longer life than conventional split bushing chains.
Lastly, the pneumatic cylinders were supplied with stainless steel shafts to prevent rust and corrosion, while providing long-life and durability.

Our Pallet Stackers/Destackers can be used to dispense or accumulate various sizes and types of pallets. The end user supplies a signal which creates an "interlock" or "handshake" between systems for easy plug and play operation and communication. Slip Sheet Dispensers can be added to any Destacker operation. Once the pallet and slip sheet are "married" they continue to the next phase for product placement. Our systems are designed for continuous use while providing accurate positioning every time.

Additional system features:
Super "E" energy efficient motors (inverter ready motors to interface with VFD's – Variable Frequency Drives);
A fully integrated control package for plug and play convenience, supplied by Alba;
Equipped with a longer drag chain conveyor and a pneumatic blade stop to accurately locate pallets underneath the slip sheet dispenser each time a pallet is dispensed;
The Pallet Handling System consists of the Pallet Destacker, Slip Sheet Dispenser, three (3) thru-frame chain transfers, and eight (8) chain driven live roller conveyor sections; and
The integrator utilizes two (2) robot loading positions for faster throughput.

TRIVIA: CHEP and its Origins

These blue CHEP pallets were used to provide efficient handling of defense supplies during World War II. When the war ended in 1945, Americans returned home, leaving behind millions of blue pallets at their military bases in Australia. With this asset base and established infrastructure, the Australian Government continued to endorse the organization after the war to support the national economy.

In 1949, the industry was privatized and sold to the Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pool (CHEP). Brambles Limited, a company created in 1875 by Walter Edwin Bramble and well experienced in the materials handling industry, purchased CHEP on April 24, 1958. It is headquartered in Sydney, Australia and has operations in 45 countries, employs approximately 7,500 people and has a pool of approximately 300 million blue US Navy pallets and containers.

Optimal material flow is important in any application, especially in automated conveying systems. Developing an ideal solution requires balancing ergonomics, repetition, speed and throughput while providing maximum safety.

Robotic operations such as palletizing, depalletizing, assembly and welding are commonly found in automated conveyor systems. Providing accurate and repeatable pallet positioning despite variations in pallet size and weight are critical.

Alba and an SI (Systems Integrator) partner designed an ergonomic, labor-saving, cost-reducing system to locate loads varying significantly in size and weight: up to 6,000 lbs. and up to 129 in. long x 83 in. wide.
